Harmonica Contest

Step back in time at the Wilson County - Tennessee State Fair and celebrate the musical legacy of one of the Grand Ole Opry's earliest stars! We are thrilled to announce the inaugural Dr. Humphrey Bate Memorial Old-Time Harmonica Contest, held on the historic Gallinipper's Stage in Fiddlers Grove.

Dr. Humphrey Bate, a respected physician and leader of the popular string band "Dr. Bate & His Possum Hunters," was renowned for his skilled harmonica playing, which delighted early Opry audiences. This contest honors his contribution to Tennessee's rich musical heritage by showcasing the acoustic harmonica styles prevalent before World War II.

Join us for a lively competition dedicated to the sounds of classic folk, blues, old-time country, and ballads played on the humble mouth harp.
When: Annually on the First Saturday of the Wilson County - Tennessee State Fair, starting in 2025
Registration: 11 AM at the Gallinipper's Stage
Contest Begins: 12 PM
Where: Gallinipper's Stage in Fiddlers Grove Historic Village
Condition: Rain or Shine!

Rules

  1. Style: Performances must feature acoustic (non-amplified) harmonica playing in styles authentic to the era before World War II (pre-1945). This includes, but is not limited to, old-time fiddle tunes, country blues, folk melodies, ballads, and breakdowns characteristic of that period.
  2. Instrumentation: This is primarily a solo harmonica contest. Minimal, appropriate acoustic accompaniment (ex: one guitar) may be permitted at the judges' discretion, but the primary focus and judging will be on the harmonica performance.
  3. Registration: All participants must register in person at the Gallinipper's Stage between 11 - 11:45 AM on the day of the contest. A registration fee may apply (TBD).
  4. Performance Time: Each contestant will be given a set time limit to perform (ex: 3-5 minutes, sufficient for one or two tunes - exact time TBD).
  5. Judging: Contestants will be judged on criteria such as stylistic authenticity, technical proficiency, tone, tune selection, and overall musicality/presentation.
  6. Originality: While traditional tunes are encouraged, original compositions in a pre-war style are also welcome.
Whether you play the harmonica yourself or just love authentic American roots music, come gather 'round the Gallinipper's Stage! Experience the timeless sounds of the old-time harmonica and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Humphrey Bate in the heart of the Wilson County - Tennessee State Fair. Bring your harps, bring your ears and be ready for a foot-stomping good time!

(Further details regarding categories and specific judging criteria will be announced closer to the Fair.)
