General Rules

  1. Must be accompanied by an official Certificate of Veterinary Inspection, (CVI), processed and issued within 90 days of the date of arrival at Fair that shows official individual identification by an 840 electronic tag, complete description of livestock as to age, sex, breed, and also that they are free of external parasites, ringworms, or warts, or any infectious, contagious, or communicable disease.
  2. Show schedule: see above for arrival, check in, show times and dates.
  3. All entries to be made online a. $15.00/entry
  4. All swine have to be in place by August 20 by 12 PM a. No showing off trailer b. No parking around the barns 15
  5. This is a Tennessee Swine Show Circuit Sanctioned show
  6. Premiums: a. 1st-$50, 2nd-$45, 3rd-$40, 4th-$35, 5th-$30 b. Top 5 Overall Champion Premiums: 1st-$250, 2nd-$200, 3rd-$150, 4th-$100, 5th-$50 c. All premiums will be mailed after the show.
  7. All purebred breeding animals must be recorded in their respective breed
  8. Registration papers must be shown to staff a. Must be in junior/family members name - No farm name
  9. Exhibitors will need to have number clips or safety pins for numbers a. Numbers must be worn when exhibiting
  10. Ownership deadline - June 1, 2024.
  11. The chosen processor is Potts Processing. The processing date is scheduled for the Champion Barrows will be either September 4 or October 2. Exhibitor will forfeit $300 from premium money and/or supply a pig.

Skillathon

Rules
  1. A Skillathon is an event held to test an individual’s knowledge of specific subject matter using the experiential learning model of exploring, reflecting, and applying that knowledge. Using materials directly or modified from the Learning Laboratory Kits, as well as activities developed from information provided in and adapted from the Ohio 4-H Animal Resource Handbooks, Oklahoma State University Extension Fact Sheets and various other sources. The swine skillathon is created to challenge the exhibitor’s knowledge of all aspects of the swine industry. A facilitator is present to offer directions only if needed.
  2. Topics to be expected but not limited to: quality assurance, animal anatomy, nutrition, meat cut identification, reproduction and genetics, diseases, biosecurity, and animal care. Each junior swine exhibitor entered in the skillathon will have its own skill level.
  3. The swine skillathon is open to any swine show exhibitor. Must have a smart phone
  • *There will be changes made to the skillathon. It will be taken on paper and will have stations set up for their respective levels.*

Junior Swine Showmanship

Registration: Sign up at announcers stand - Barn Y (Covered Arena)

1. Open to exhibitors of Junior Swine exhibitors as of January 1, 2024 of the current year.
2. Check-in deadline for showmanship is August 20, 2024 at 9 AM - 12 PM

Purebred Breeding Gilts

Rules:
  1. All swine must have a health certificate along with an 840 tag
  2. The age of youth exhibitors, as of January 1, 2024, must be 21 years and under.
  3. Junior exhibitors must be able to show animal without assistance, unless approved by staff.
  4. This show is a Tennessee Junior Swine Show Circuit sanctioned show. Points will be awarded for all Tennessee swine exhibitors for the summer circuit series.
  5. All purebred gilts must have pedigrees. Ownership deadline is June 1, 2024.
  6. All pedigrees must be officially transferred into the exhibitor’s name by the respective breed association prior to June 1, 2023. Pedigrees that are simply signed on the back by the respective breeder and not officially transferred into the exhibitor’s name by the breed association will not be accepted.
  7. All breeds must have 10 or more gilts & barrows to have a show. If not, they will show AOB.

The following breeds will be offered but must have 10 to make a breed show:

Duroc Breeding Gilt

  4. This show is a Tennessee Junior Swine Show Circuit sanctioned show. Points will be awarded for all Tennessee swine exhibitors for the summer circuit series.
  5. An estimated weight, as determined by the exhibitor, will be written on the entry card, and used to determine show classification. There will be no official weigh in.
  6. All crossbred gilts must weigh a maximum of 330 pounds. Upon completion of each class showing, show management will weigh at least the top 3 gilts, but may weigh more if there are disqualifications. Any gilt weighed by the officials weighing more than 325 pounds with more than 15 pounds above the official estimated weight, as determined by the exhibitor at the time of entry, will be eliminated from the show. Should any of the top 3 gilts weigh out, the next place gilt will move up and be weighed. The same procedure will then be followed until three (3) qualified gilts are selected.
  7. Any animal exhibited in the wrong class will be disqualified.

Swine Breed Characteristics Guidelines

Berkshire
  • A black and white animal with erect ears exhibiting Berkshire characteristics
  • A Berkshire must have white on all four (4) legs, face, and tail, unless the tail is docked. One (1) of the white leg points may also be missing.
  • A Berkshire must NOT have a solid white or solid black face from the ears forward
  • A Berkshire must NOT have a solid black nose - rim of nose
  • White is allowed on the ears, but NO solid white may appear
  • An occasional splash of white may appear on the body
Chester White
  • Must possess Chester White breed characteristics
  • Must be solid white in color, no color on the skin larger than a silver dollar, no colored hair
  • Any skin pigmentation, other than white, that exceeds five (5) in number is disqualified
  • Ears must be down and medium size
  • Any signs of weighted ear tags or evidence of past existence of such tags are determined to be not permissible and are grounds for disqualification
Duroc
  • Must be red in color and possess Duroc breed characteristics
  • Ears must be down and medium size
  • Must NOT have any white or black hair on the animal
  • Must NOT have more than three (3) black spots on the skin, none of which can be larger than 2 inches in diameter
  • Must NOT have any shading or indication of a belt
Hampshire
  • Must possess Hampshire breed characteristics
  • Ears must be erect and not rounded
  • Must be black in color with a white belt starting on the front leg. The belt may be partially or totally encircling the body
  • Must NOT have any white hair or indications of streaking on the forehead
  • Must not have any red hair
Hereford
  • Must be red, light, or dark however, with a white head, ears, and 4 white legs
  • Ears must be at least broke forward
  • Hereford Market Animals shall be eligible with at least 50% of a white face, at least 50% red body, at least 2 white feet. This will be known as the 50-50-50 rule
  • Reporting of belts and black spots in breeding animals off springs. Belts and black spots do appear occasionally. It is the job of the breeders and members to do their best to eliminate this from their herds.
Landrace
  • Must be white in color and possess Landrace breed characteristics (ears must be down)
  • Must NOT allow any color hair other than white
  • Must NOT allow more than three (3) spots of skin pigmentation
  • Must NOT allow any spot of skin pigmentation larger than one U.S. minted quarter
  • Must have no evidence of an extra dewclaw
Poland China
  • Must possess Poland China breed characteristics
  • Must be black with six (6) white points - face, feet, and tail - with an occasional splash of white on the body. A hog may not possess more than one (1) black leg and to be determined as a Poland China. Tail docking is permissible, eliminating that white point
  • Must have ears down
  • Must NOT have evidence of belt formation
  • Cannot have any red or sandy hair and/or pigment
  • Hogs that have weighted ear tags or evidence of such tampering are ineligible
  • Must NOT have any colored hair, other than white or black
  • Must NOT have any red or blue colored skin pigmentation larger than a silver dollar
  • Must NOT have masking above the eyes larger than a silver dollar
  • Any signs of weighted ear tags or evidence of past existence of such tags are determined to be not permissible and are grounds for disqualification
Spot
  • Must possess Spot breed characteristics
  • Must be black and white in color
  • Ears must be down and reasonably sized
  • Any red tinted or sandy brown spots are ineligible
  • No solid black head from ears forward
  • No distinct white belt pattern - hair or skin - encircling and extending down and onto each shoulder
  • Any signs of weighted ear tags or evidence of past existence of such tags are determined to be not permissible and are grounds for disqualification
Yorkshire
  • Must be white in color and possess Yorkshire breed characteristics
  • Ears must be erect
  • Must NOT have any colored hair, other than white
  • Must NOT have colored skin pigmentation larger than a silver dollar
  • Must NOT have masking above the eyes larger than a silver dollar
